My phone buzzes with a text at 2:45 a.m.
You must be drunk and thinking again
I used to try and read between the lines
but that has proven a waste of my time
You only want what you don’t have
You’re only happy when you’re sad
Once upon a time my heart was yours
For so long it was you I adored
But a heart can only take so many cracks
before it breaks altogether and there’s no going back
Picking up the pieces and getting over you
was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do
So next time you’re drunk and looking at your phone
please text someone else and leave me alone

AWARDS
I was honored to win 2nd Place in the 2017 South Dakota Newspaper Association's Better Newspaper Contest for my Feature Series on Whiteclay.
"This series is powerful -- both the coverage of the ongoing battle to close the beer stores in Whiteclay and the accompanying photographs that support the writing nicely. Excellent coverage of a landmark story in this region." Judges Comments
